THE QUESTION
I fell in love with surfing at the first wave. As a beginner surfer and designer, I asked myself what could be done in the field of surfboard design. After intensive research, I focused on something more than a graphic approach: which material could bring a genuine benefit and an additional experience to the user, and could something be done in the structural design of a board?
THE DESIGN RESPONSE
Inspired by the sun reflections on the water, I tried to recreate them and give surfers a new perspective. A transparent sandwich construction over a carbon lattice gives the user a chance to see and enjoy the flora and fauna under the surface of the water. With that function, the board is ideal for paddle and classic surfers.
MAKING IT
The blank was robot-milled, the lattice core cut and finished, then laminated in carbon fibre prepreg and closed with the transparent skin. The moulded fin was developed alongside the board as a single piece of the composition.
